Emergency Skin is my personal favorite book in the Forward Collection. The audiobook is only an hour-long, but it paints a picture of abandoned earth, several extremist and elitist factions that have left and return every few years to harvest resources.

The story takes place from the robotic skinsuit of the silent protagonist. The protagonist’s suit serves as the source of the narration when the remnants of Earthlings aren’t talking. The suit responds to the protagonist’s thoughts and questions. The suit is desperately trying to maintain control while the protagonist is second-guessing everything they know.

I wish I had more to say. But with the story being so short and my goal to keep my reviews spoiler-free, all I can say is read this (or listen). This is a book I would 100% get behind if it was turned into a full-length novel or series and I think it would have the potential to succeed if that were ever to be the case.
