I’m approaching this boxed set from what I hope will be a unique perspective. I’m not a Hellboy fan and I know very little of it. I’ve seen one of the movies, some replica prop builds, behind-the-scenes stuff, and not much else.

Retailing at 100$, I wanted to know how beginner-friendly this omnibus would be. The omnibus starts from the beginning with the first comic. I wasn’t sure if that was the case or not initially, so I’m grateful that it is, since I can read along like fans of the past have done and learn about the world and lore as I go.

I was only on the second chapter of the first book when I found myself completely hooked. With each page and each comic, I find myself wanting to deep-dive into the world and lore.

It’s never difficult to tell who’s talking or what order speech bubbles are intended to be read and the artwork is stunning. The color palates feel dark, grim, and mysterious. They really fit the theme and world and set the mood properly as you’re reading.

If you’re already a Hellboy fan, you likely already gave these comics. But whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the series like myself, I think it offers something for everybody. That being convenience. Tracking down all of the comics and sorting them into reading order would be a hassle. While the omnibus is split into four parts, it’s easy to pick out the story you wish to read with easily legible spines and using bookmarks to mark your place.

This is a review copy I’ve deliberately left unfinished. I’m eagerly awaiting the full release so I can pick up the set and read the entire omnibus from start to finish over a weekend. Definitely give this one a read.

NOTE: This omnibus was provided to me free of charge as a review copy. The opinions stated in this review are mine and mine alone, I was not paid or requested to give this omnibus a certain rating, suggestion, or approval.

  1. Great start to the review and I love your perspective as a new reader of Hellboy. $100 is a lot but I think with that slipcase and the chance to start at the beginning it is definitely worth the price.
