Wow, that’s all I want to say. What a book. I first learned about the Titanic as a kid, while watching the 1997 film; because of this, I’ve had an interest in it since I was a kid. Everything from its discovery to the artifacts recovered from the site, the conspiracies about it being replaced with its sister ship as an insurance scam. Everything to do with human-made objects being lost at sea has interested me since I was a kid and the Titanic is quite possibly the origin of this fascination.
Rescuing Titanic is full of beautiful artwork that appears to be a mix of watercolors and colored pencils. Each page has relevant artwork and snippets of text, breaking down the events leading up to, during, and after the sinking. The story takes place from the perspective of both the Titanic and the Carpathia which is new and interesting as I’ve rarely ever heard anything about the Carpathia, aside from it rescuing the passengers.
This book has everything from full-page artwork to comic-like panels. The art is used in creative and beneficial ways, such as the morse code messages sent between ships being incorporated into the background art. The art reflects the mood of the text; If the scene calls for action, the artwork reflects that. The artwork blends exceptionally well with the text and they compliment each other as you read along.
This is a short read, but in my opinion, is well worth the asking price. This book would be suitable for parents who are interested in teaching their children about the disaster, teachers, and students, or just people interested in the Titanic in general. This book deserves to be read.
