I wasn’t expecting much out of this book. Most fantasy stories seem to either dump you into the world or give you an entire book full of exposition and world-building. I was pleasantly surprised to find this book included some intense action scenes.
I may be a bit biased in favor of this series. I love stories that have people who fight secret wars while everybody else in the world remains oblivious. I was reminded of some of my favorite series of all time while reading this. Namely, the Vampire Huntress Legend Series, Person of Interest and, Supernatural.
It’s a great starter book to a series and has what I’m going to start calling “part 1 endings”. Where the book ends, but it feels more like you’ve just finished a chapter and need to pick up book 2 to keep going. I prefer this when reading a series vs. books where each story is a self-contained adventure.
I don’t have much to say about the narrator. She was excellent and did a great job of adding emotion to the lines. This is also a rare Audible audiobook that isn’t plagued with repeated dialogue or the clicking of a computer mouse. So bonus points for that.
I recommend this book to anybody who likes fantasy. The characters and their dialogue are well written. The story is engaging and interesting and it does a wonderful job of world building.
