I’ll start this off directly to the point. Skip the audiobook, the narrator is truly awful. There are 4 kinds of narrators. Good narrators, narrators who can do good character voices, narrators who can do good scene settings, and then bad narrators. This audio narration falls into the fucking abysmal category.
Nearly every single fucking line of this book is read in the same tone of voice. She lacks any vocal inflections, character, or personality. She reads it with the same enthusiasm as somebody reading a fucking newspaper article about asinine shit. Due to her lack of vocal inflections, it’s extremely difficult to tell who is speaking based on the sound of their voice, as they all have literally the exact same voice and that goes for accents as well. Toss in the occasional instance of repeated dialogue and there are also some back-and-forth message scenes that just don’t work in the audiobook, as if that coffin needed more nails.
If you’re new to Vaugn Ashby’s work, bring a sense of humor. With phrases such as “shit on a clock” being spoken, it’s what fans of his work will have cum to expect. This is not a sequel you’ll be able to follow along without having previously read the first book. Having read or listened to his other works isn’t a requirement, but the occasional references and mentions will go over your head otherwise. In my opinion, this just adds to the re-listenability or re-readability of his works.
To keep this spoiler free, and also because I’m not done listening yet, the plot is a continuation of book 1. It has the usual Vaugn Ashby charm, humor, and style. If you enjoyed the first book, just buy the rest already. If you enjoyed his other work, it’s more of the same.
I love the Aurora Wasteland literary universe (at least, the ones I’ve read. And I was admittedly iffy on The Axe.) I genuinely wish I had the time to make a wiki for this universe. I’ve said before, the only reason I made a Bloodlines Reforged Saga Wiki and not an Aurora Wasteland Wiki was because I discovered the BRS first. I guess this is just my way of saying Vaughn Ashy is one of my favorite authors. I fucking love his sense of humor and I think more people should buy his books, including this one.
