This review covers the audiobook only.

I’m tapping out. I’m not even all of the way through chapter 2 and if I have to suffer through another second of this godawful narrator, I’m going to lose my mind.

First off, there’s an ever-present, obnoxious background hissing that’s distracting as all hell. She can’t pronounce the word “familiar” right. I can’t stand narrators who can’t pronounce basic words properly, adding imaginary letters. “Farmiliar” isn’t a goddamn word. On top of these two annoyances, is just her overall tone of voice. And I mean tone in the singular sense. She reads every single line in a high-pitched, obnoxious tone of voice. Every character sounds the same and when 3 people are in a conversation with each other, I can’t tell who is saying what.

This audiobook lacks any sort of professional standards. As for the book itself, I’m hesitant to recommend it anyway. I didn’t like the first book in this series, although I enjoyed nearly every other story in the Gates of Eden literary universe that I’ve listened to so far.

But now the vampires are on the rise. Most of them, she can handle without much trouble. But when an ancient, more powerful vampire confronts her – one who is uncomfortably familiar to her – and his apprentice joins her at the Voodoo Academy, she finds she has little choice. Help this vampire arrest and overpower death itself, or risk seeing her sister and parents irrevocably “turned” themselves.

Grim Tidings is the second book in the Gates of Eden: The Voodoo Legacy series. Theophilus Monroe’s Annabelle Mulledy is a badass heroine with a snarky attitude. Monroe draws on the legend and myth of Voodoo lore in a way that neither caricatures the arts as “demonic” nor glosses over the dark side of the Voodoo tradition. With dark magic, dragons, vampires, and some budding light slow-burn romance, Gates of Eden: The Voodoo Legacy series has something for everybody.

[315,26,13,504,4,12,281,109,105,335,175,178,66,179,181,337,177,116
317,21,8,103,529,9,53,515
